2024 Juneteenth Celebration in Sanford
June 19, 2024
Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history, celebrating the freedom of enslaved African Americans in Texas in 1865. Often referred to as Independence Day for African Americans, this significant day was declared a National Holiday by President Biden in 2021, recognizing its profound importance in our nation’s journey towards equality.
Sanford and Orlando’s grassroots organization, SAO, recently hosted Sanford’s 4th annual Juneteenth festival, a vibrant celebration of freedom and unity. This year’s event featured notable guest speakers, including Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma and community activist Mr. Kenneth Bentley, who both shared powerful messages of hope and progress.
The festival was a lively and colorful gathering, with over 70 food and art vendors showcasing a diverse array of culinary delights and creative works. The atmosphere was electric, filled with music, laughter, and a strong sense of community spirit.
SAO’s dedication and hard work truly shone through, making this year’s festival a memorable and impactful event. The celebration not only honored the historical significance of Juneteenth but also highlighted the ongoing efforts to foster unity and understanding within the community. As we look forward to future celebrations, the spirit of Juneteenth continues to inspire and unite us all.
Front Porch Gala
May 18, 2024
Last night, the Goldsboro Front Porch Banquet was buzzing with excitement as we gathered to honor James E.C. Perry. His name graces the new courthouse annex in Sanford, a $76 million tribute to his legacy. Perry, the 5th African American Supreme Court Justice for Florida, and the 85th appointed overall, broke barriers and paved the way for others.
Perry himself graced the event, accepting the Pioneer Award with humility. He acknowledged the influence of giants like Thurgood Marshall, emphasizing the importance of giving back to our communities. His words resonated deeply, reminding us of the power of gratitude and unity.
The banquet was a vibrant mix of laughter, applause, and camaraderie. People from all walks of life came together to celebrate Perry's achievements and the values he stands for. It was a testament to the diversity and inclusivity of our community, showing the strength that comes from coming together.
Throughout the evening, stories were shared, memories cherished, and bonds strengthened. From Perry's early career to his landmark cases, each moment highlighted his impact on the legal profession and beyond. It was a night filled with pride and admiration, inspiring us to strive for excellence and justice.
As the banquet concluded, there was a sense of hope in the air—a belief that Perry's legacy would endure. His journey from humble beginnings to esteemed jurist serves as a beacon of hope for all who dream of making a difference. And as we said goodbye to this unforgettable evening, we were reminded of our collective responsibility to pursue justice and equality for all.
In honoring James E.C. Perry, the Goldsboro Front Porch Banquet reaffirmed our commitment to justice, equality, and community. It was a night to remember—one that will inspire us to continue the journey towards a brighter future for everyone.
